TEDxYYC 2017 Artist in Residence

Apr 25, 2017

TEDxYYC’s 2017 Artist in Residence is a true case of art imitating life an artist musing on diversity, disability and individuality.

New to the annual TEDxYYC event, 2017 attendees will experience the artwork by our first-ever TEDxYYC Artist in Residence the minute they walk through the door. In the spirit of ‘ideas worth spreading’ and expanding the footprint of local arts, TEDxYYC is piloting an Artist in Residence program this year where a local Calgary artist will create a new artistic creation for installation at TEDxYYC 2017 on June 23 at Arts Commons.

Inspired by this year’s event theme – Intersect – this artist residency was created as a way to fund, support and showcase the talents of a local artist. After reviewing a number of outstanding entries, our jury selected Calgarian Jana Brodkin-Singh as our 2017 TEDxYYC Artist in Residence.

Jana’s thought-provoking installation will involve acrylic and mixed media on canvas; the narrative will explore diversity, emotion and intersections. Seeking to challenge people’s notions of what people look like, the artwork “Painted Portraits” will explore the question, “When you put people together, what happens?”

“I believe that this project can reach a large and diverse audience,” says Jana Brodkin-Singh, TEDxYYC 2017 Artist in Residence. “‘Painted Portraits’ will give a voice to the people who stand in the background. Sometimes people are scared of being the focus of attention.” Jana hopes her TEDxYYC installation makes a lasting impact, “The most important part of a life to me is creating, making and expressing yourself and helping others to do the same.”

“The local arts scene is truly thriving in our Calgary community. We’re thrilled to help contribute to the outstanding legacy of local Calgary artists like Jana Brodkin-Singh through our new TEDxYYC Artist in Residence program,” says Josh Boser, TEDxYYC 2017 Committee Co-Chair. “Sharing ideas and stimulating meaningful discussion is essential to building a stronger community. We look forward to shining the spotlight on Jana’s artwork at our upcoming event in June.”

“Painted Portraits” will be installed in the lobby of the Jack Singer Concert Hall on June 23 at TEDxYYC – Calgary’s largest and most well-attended independently-organized TED event. In honour of #Canada150, TEDxYYC 2017 will feature an all-Canadian collection of big thinkers, action takers, courageous innovators, trailblazers and brave artists to our stage from all corners of Technology, Entertainment and Design. Stay tuned for more announcements of speakers and performers in the coming weeks.
