Behind the Scenes of TEDxYYC – An Interview with Front of House

May 10, 2016

TEDxYYC is an independently-organized event, run entirely by volunteers. The enthusiasm of TEDxYYC speakers, entertainers and hosts are reflected backstage by the many volunteers required to design and deliver such a noteworthy event. This blog series looks behind the scenes, and meets the friendly faces of Calgary’s largest TEDx event.

Volunteer Profile: Jessica, Front of House

TEDxYYC: Hi Jessica! This is your first year volunteering with TEDxYYC! That’s awesome! Why did you decide to volunteer?

Jess: I’ve been consistently inspired by different TED and TEDx talks I’ve watched over the years and when I was asked to be a part of the committee this year I jumped at the opportunity! I’m excited bring my event management skills to the table, meet new people and be involved in an event that builds community and brings people together in Calgary.

TEDxYYC: As the Front of House coordinator for TEDxYYC, what will be your main responsibilities?

Jess: Our team will be focusing on engaging partners and other stakeholders in creating that first experience when attendees walk through the door.   From catering, to signage, to partner activations and activities, we will be ensuring all of those pieces of the puzzle come together to create that unique experience for attendees.

TEDxYYC: Explain the types of tasks you’re expecting to handle six months prior to the event, versus what your main tasks are the day of the event?

Jess: Leading up to the event our team will be working closely with the partnership team to engage our sponsors for the day of the event, booking specific elements related to the event such as catering and other activities for the lobby.  On event day, we are responsible for the floor plan and flow of the lobby experience as well as coordinating the front of house setup and ensuring front of house activities occur on time throughout the event.

TEDxYYC: Of all the past TEDxYYC talks, which is your favourite?

Jess: Josh Dueck’s talk from 2013 is my favourite – his story of perseverance and the positive power sport can have in our lives is truly inspiring.  My favourite piece from his talk was when he said ‘allowing your intuition to guide you and not let your fear define you’ – I think it’s such a powerful message and lesson that we can apply in so many aspects of our lives.

TEDxYYC: What are you looking forward to the most about TEDxYYC 2016?

Jess: Seeing the entire experience come together!  As someone who has attended TEDxYYC in the past, I’m looking forward to being a part of the team that brings TEDxYYC 2016 to life!
