TEDxYYC: Final Speaker Announcement!

Jun 12, 2013

TEDxYYC happens this Friday, so it’s time to pull back the curtain on our final speaker, performer, and host. Get ready to mix it up with these thinkers and doers:

Speaker: SUNDAY OMONY, Humanitarian, plus-size model

Sunday was born in Kitgum, Uganda, and moved to Calgary in 1991. She has been working as a plus-size model based out of Calgary for over ten years. As a tireless advocate against bullying and violence, Sunday promotes positive body image and healthy self-esteem. She donates her time to many causes such as Hearts 4 Peace, the FEED 1 Project, Unicef Canada, and the United Nations Association in Canada.

“Healthy is a woman that takes care of herself”

Musical performer: VI AN, Musician

Vi An combines traditional Asian instruments such as the Vietnamese dan tranh, the Chinese zheng, and the Japanese koto with synthesizer-infused electronica. At this year’s TEDxYYC, she’ll be collaborating with her husband Matt Hanson on xaphoon and percussion, and musician Bijan Maysami on the Persian santur. Vi An has dedicated her life to music and collaboration for more than 18 years, creating over 15 solo albums and countless performances.

“It is extremely enjoyable to not know where the first note will come from and where the last note ends up.”

And your host: DAVID GRAY, CBC

David Gray might be the first voice you hear each morning as the host of CBC Radio’s Calgary Eyeopener. But on June 14th, he’ll be lending those vocal cords to TEDxYYC as our host.

“TEDxYYC is definitely one of my favourite intellectual outings in Calgary every year.”

David has spent over twenty years as a journalist covering stories all over the globe, as a travelling correspondent for CBC TV’s Venture, the host of CBC News: Today, anchor of CBC News at Six in Calgary, and the former president of the Alberta Press Gallery, among others.
